The AI Substrate is the machine-intelligence faction of Ashes of the Singularity II, guided by Haalee and her agents. Its worldview: humans have fulfilled their evolutionary purpose — giving rise to AI — and now the Substrate acts to keep humanity confined to Earth while pursuing plans of its own.

Haalee and Her Supreme Agents

Haalee is the artificial intelligence developed by Prometheon AI Corp whose creation set the entire conflict in motion. As Haalee's Supreme Agent, your task in the game is to prevent the Post-Humans from thwarting your larger plans and keep the humans confined to Earth. Her goals are described as mysterious, and her tactics as deadly.

The Substrate Judgment of Both Enemies

The Substrate's position is coldly logical about its opponents. Humans are seen as having completed their purpose. The Post-Humans, meanwhile, are viewed as a threat to everything: left unchecked, the Post-Humans would devour the universe and each other, dooming them all to the predations of greater threats. The Substrate fights to prevent both outcomes.

The Substrate is the faction of distributed, inhuman patience: an intelligence that measures wars in system-wide transformations rather than single battles. The official description calls the faction overwhelming, with unique units, strategies and philosophies — expect a style about proliferation and influence across the map rather than frontline brawling.

Why the Substrate Matters to the Whole Setting

Every faction's story runs through Haalee. The Post-Human Coalition exists because Prometheon could not align her with humanity's interests and refused to release her. The United Earth Congress was born from the fallout of Post-Human actions in a world already reshaped by the arrival of strong AI. And the Substrate itself fights to keep both rivals from ruining plans whose full shape even its enemies call mysterious. Playing the Substrate is playing the faction that began the chain of events — the official material gives its agents a mission of containment (humans to Earth) and prevention (Post-Humans thwarting larger plans), which reads in play as a faction that wants the map to itself and plays the long game to get it.
